Voluntary Assisted Dying

The End-of-Life Choices (Voluntary Assisted Dying) Act 2021 was passed by the Tasmanian Parliament in early 2021 to be operational by 23 October 2022.

It had overwhelming support from both houses of Parliament. This law provides people with intolerable suffering at the end of their life with the opportunity to request and receive medical help to end their suffering and achieve a death according to their wishes, subject to strict criteria set out in the Act.

Our organisation played a significant role in getting voluntary assisted dying legislation passed in Tasmania in 2021 after many years of lobbying and working with members of Parliament, including Mike Gaffney MLC, who worked very hard for this law.

Dying with Dignity Tasmania continues to be involved in the implementation of the End-of-Life Choices (Voluntary Assisted Dying) Act 2021 and will play a key role in the review of the Act in 2025.
